How important is good posture and how does it impact
our daily lives?
All fitness studies have sections on identifying
posture deviations, the importance of good posture and identifying these.
Posture does much more than emphasize incorrect
biomechanics, it has also been observed as a manner of identifying a persons
emotional state. Before uttering our first words to a person when meeting, we
make some conscious and subconscious evaluations of the person by their
appearance, mannerisms and energy. A
good portion of this is based on their posture and stance.
We all can admire a professional ballerina who seems
to glide across the floor with chest held high, looking beautiful and
confident. It takes years of discipline as well as consistent
work to reach an almost perfect alignment.
The overactive muscles need to be stretched and the under
active muscles need to be strengthened.
Often these incorrect postures are from fatigue, hours of incorrect
sitting, driving and watching TV as well as a typical sedentary lifestyle.
A few symptoms of bad posture include;
- Back, neck and shoulder pain
- Foot, knee and hip injuries
- Headaches
- Fatigue
- Digestive problems
- Sciatica
- Poor breathing technique
As instructors, adding posture
awareness corrections prior to a class commencing, reminding
members during the session as well as planning classes around muscle balance
will go a long way to assisting clients to improve their quality of daily life.
